What is Labor Day?

Labor Day is a public holiday celebrated in the United States on the first Monday of September to honor the contributions of workers and the labor movement. The day officially became a holiday for federal workers when President Grover Cleveland signed a bill on June 28, 1894.

The modern spirit of Labor Day has evolved into celebrating the unofficial end of summer and to mark the start of several societal events:

  • The new school year
  • The commencement of fall sports, most prominently football
  • The arrival of Autumn and fallen leafage
  • Prepping one’s home for impending cold weather
  • Labor Day Weekend sales (AKA Summer Closeout Sales)
  • Transitioning from summer fashion to fall fashion

Note: Regarding the saying “you can’t wear white after Labor Day” — according to the Farmers’ Almanac, by the 1950s, not wearing white after Labor Day was a firm rule among the wealthy, who regarded it as a symbol of refinement. Prior to this practice being widely adhered to, wearing white beyond Labor Day was deemed as showing off, as only the wealthy could afford end-of-summer vacations and were unconcerned about soiling their white fabrics.
