Fire Prevention Week 2026 by NFPA

Fire Prevention Week (FPW) 2026, October 4–10, focuses on a simple but increasingly important part of everyday home safety: charging devices with lithium-ion batteries safely.

This year’s campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” encourages homeowners and families to develop safer charging habits and understand how improper charging, damaged batteries, and other battery-related hazards can lead to fires and injuries.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, wireless headphones, power tools, toys, e-bikes, and e-scooters. Because these batteries store significant amounts of energy in a relatively small package, safe use and charging are important parts of fire prevention. NFPA’s 2026 educational materials emphasize charging devices according to manufacturers’ instructions and using appropriate charging equipment.

Throughout Fire Prevention Week, NFPA encourages communities to learn about lithium-ion battery safety and take practical steps to reduce the risk of battery-related fires.

Key safety messages include:

• Charge safely: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the charging equipment recommended or supplied by the manufacturer.
• Charge on a hard, flat surface: Avoid charging devices on beds, couches, pillows, or other surfaces that can trap heat.
• Pay attention to batteries and devices: Damaged batteries or devices can present a fire hazard and should not be used or charged.
• Know what you are charging: Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are found in more everyday products than many people realize, making safe charging habits increasingly important in the home.
