Like most passionate homeowners, we enjoy discovering design inspiration in all avenues of our daily lives. In short, we are curious design opportunists, always looking for new ideas and spaces that resonate with us. However, one source of inspiration that we have found to be exceptionally rich is that of Hospitality Design (HD).
Given that we often hear seasoned, gifted designers site travel as a critical source of new ideas and inspiration, this insight should come as no surprise to us.
There is an overarching aphorism echoed throughout the hospitality industry:
“It’s all about the experience!”
Thus, hospitality design has much to offer homeowners who are looking for ways to enhance the ambience and comfort of their homes.
On the surface, high-end luxury resort hotels may not appear to have much in common with the day-to-day realities of busy modern households. However, these pillars of opulent, quality standards overflow with both inspirational and practical ideas for any homeowner looking to elevate their at-home sensorial vibe for themselves and their guests.
Having recently attended HD Expo + Conference 2025 (“HD Expo“) held in Las Vegas, we sought advice from a wide range of hospitality experts: designers, manufacturers, suppliers, consultants, and venue operators. Our primary reason for attending the conference was to understand what makes the hospitality experience so unique and memorable. Specifically, what can homeowners learn to replicate the essence of luxury hospitality in their own homes?
In this article, we share a collection of trends, products, and ideas from the hospitality world, that we discovered at this year’s HD Expo. It’s our goal that these insights will help you infuse your own home with extraordinary comfort and experiences for you, your family, and your guests.

Hotels and resorts invest an enormous amount of time, money, and intelligence in maintaining and elevating guest experiences year over year.

Highly creative and competitive visionaries are constantly developing new features to ensure that guests willfully remain on their properties throughout their stays and remain loyal to their brands in the future. Resorts now offer everything from immersive entertainment spaces to in-room customizations and personalization with information gained through smart technology.
While consumer demand for high-end health, wellness, and safety amenities increase, hospitality brands impressively continue to innovate, while battling labor shortages, increased pricing, supply chain disruptions, and fierce competition.
We were not surprised to learn that most, if not all, prominent themes currently driving hospitality design have also been concurrently influencing residential design:
- Wellness and Therapeutic Focus (including Biophilic Design)
- Sustainable Materials and Practices
- Ease-of-Maintenance
- Experiential Amenities
- Flexible Layouts and Transformable Design
- Smart Technology
In the case of wellness, hotels and resorts have expanded and evolved physical wellness features (e g. Fitness Centers, Health Spas, In-Room Accoutrements) to encompass mental and emotional comfort. From luxury in-room amenities, such as sleep mists, shower steamers, and pulse point oils, hotels are indulging their guests to focus on their emotional and spiritual health in the privacy and comfort of their rooms.

In concert, room designs are more comforting and tranquil with soft lighting, natural materials and calming color palettes to promote relaxation. Science-backed design — also referred to as Evidence-based Design (EBD) — is playing a key role in understanding emotional and physical reactions to discrete design variables, such as color, materials, auditory influences, scent, and air quality.
An intriguing challenge hospitality designers face is balancing two expectations and preferences of guests that are often at odds with each other:
- A familiar sense of home (e.g. comfortable bedding, peace & quiet, convenient utility)
- Surprising elements of delight (new experiences that raise quality standards beyond what guests may anticipate)
In short, these two goals need to mesh well together to make guests feel special and comfortable.

This goal is being accomplished with the use of smart technology to increase the delight of guests, while providing that exclusivity that they expect. Technology is driving mobile check in and check out, the ability to cast from personal mobile phones popular streaming services, such as Amazon Prime and Netflix, and other AI driven personalization to create unique and well-crafted experiences.
Other interesting trends that are interplaying with Hospitality Design include:
- AI (Artificial Intelligence) design tools being used as prolific “idea” and “pattern” generators
- Designers becoming less enthralled with “trends” and more in tuned with emotional connections to a given space — how a room makes you feel
- Often having to hide function (e.g. electrical plugs) and requisite durability with style
- Designers believing that we are living during an exciting time, as there is a sense of more freedom to express, with innovation fueling an ever growing “toolbox” of methods, materials and products
- Designers increasingly being aware that spaces are experienced with all of our senses — scent and sound, for example, are not relegated to secondary status
- Hospitality design influencing other industries, such as healthcare design and amenities in modern office buildings
- Wellness-focused design is quickly being perceived as “simply good design”
The Intersection of Hospitality and the Home
The best hotels and resorts create a welcoming atmosphere, much like the quintessential residential host or hostess. In both hospitality and residential spaces, the goal is to establish an environment that is comfortable, inviting, enjoyable and personal.

Providing preeminent accommodations with unsurpassed indulgence, consistently on a daily basis, is only possible with the following capabilities:
- Durability
- Timelessness
- Functionality
- Transformability
Fundamentally, what luxury hotels require in terms of design is in line with what most discerning homeowners would desire for their own properties.
Not surprisingly, luxury hospitality buyers become more risk adverse as the cost and quality increase in their design choices. In other words, the greater the investment, the longer you will want your choices to last. In the hospitality industry, a 5-to-7 year lifespan for key design elements is fairly standard. Spaces with high daily traffic and usage, such as rugs and furniture in common areas, can have much shorter lifespans (e.g. 3 years).

Though commercial grade materials and furnishings may seem like overkill for most residential applications, we disagree. For example, when encountering a furniture style that resonates with you, we strongly recommend investing in materials, treatments and craftsmanship that will endure beyond a 5-to-10 year update average.
Furnishings with physically and aesthetically lasting appeal are symbolic of smart sustainability. Furthermore, designs need to be practical and functional, ensuring that layout designs are well organized and easy to navigate and experience over extended periods.

Both hospitality and residential design should create an impactful experience, be it one of indulgent comfort and extravagance — but it should be memorable. Examples of these lavish comforts would be bidet toilets, spa kits, in-room beverage services, and unforgettable, pleasant aromas and fragrances.
In essence, homeowners should aspire to create the same sense of opulence in their homes that they would enjoy at a 5-star resort, for themselves and their guests.
Hospitality designers admit that the residential and hospitality design spaces are becoming blurred. Here are several topics where hospitality design is directly pertinent to residential spaces with links to corresponding articles:

Products We Loved at HD Expo 2025
While perusing the expo floor, we thought about products used in hospitality that are memorable, that leave a lasting impression, and that favorably remind you of a vacation or a place in time from many years ago.

For instance, we still remember our wedding night whenever we note the aroma of the bath amenities that were, and are still, available at the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa. Ocean scents and soft, plush towels, slippers and robes are all a part of that memory, a warm, fond sentiment, that takes us back so many years ago.
When curating this list, we focused on those items that give one a feeling of longing, comfort and good memories, be it something that would leave a lasting image in your mind, or a scent that lingers, or some other sensory appeal that reminds you of that tranquil holiday from years ago.
Addressing the question — what makes a vacation special? — these are our favorite products encountered at HD Expo 2025:
Products That Delight
The name Tuuci derives from the company’s original name of “The Ultimate Umbrella Company Inc.“— and they mean it! Though they offer so much more than parasols, Tuuci still absolutely excels at their core product line. This year’s Ocean Master Max Bolero Ombré Blossom parasol won Best of Competition in the 2025 IIDA/HD Expo Product Design Awards. At the awards ceremony, the judges gave the following compliments: “the wood looked incredible“; “the project photography was key“; “it projected a sense of playfulness and escape“; “it popped“.

We add that this recently launched product — as well as the larger Ocean Master Mega Max Voilare, which was also majestically on display — combine playful, surprising design, with high-quality materials, precision engineering, elegant aesthetics, robust durability, and highly desireable functionality. These two products deliver on all aspects of excellent hospitality design: they look great; they are enjoyable to experience, whether underneath, nearby or faraway; they become an attractive part of the outdoor landscape and architecture; and they provide protection while still feeling the openness of being outside.
Kalco’s Cape Wall Sconce won the Lighting Category in the 2025 IIDA/HD Expo Product Design Awards. One judge remarked that the scone is “like a beautiful surprise…like a woman’s purse“. These sconces are yet another example of how innovatively designed lighting can serve as beautiful functional art.
